A CHIPATA man has strangled his wife to death.
And police in Vubwi are holding four pupils in connection with the riot that took place at the school.
Eastern Province police commissioner Alex Chilufya said the deceased Fildes Phiri, 36 of Kuona village in chief Mshawa’s area was murdered by her husband Tizza Tembo on an unknown date but between 20:00 hours on Sunday and 05:00 hours on Monday.
“She was killed by her husband, Tizza Tembo, aged between 30 and 35, who strangled her to death. [Her] neck was swollen and has scratch[es]. The body is in the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and no arrest has been made,” Chilufya said.
And Chilufya said police in Vubwi are holding four pupils from Chigwe Combined School for rioting.
He said the riot was sparked by the school head teacher’s decision to stop night lectures conducted by teachers during study time.
“They also felt frustrated by the shortage of classroom desks. These matters do not in any way warrant breaking the law or indeed anyone else,” Chilufya said. “The riot started at 20:00 hours and these pupils broke the windows for the head teacher’s vehicle and a window for the house.”
He said Vubwi district commissioner, education officials and police officers addressed pupils and teachers at the school on Monday and order had been restored.
Last week, pupils at Mfuwe Day Secondary School in Mambwe also rioted after their colleague died after being electrocuted./SM/JC
