Mbesuma’s sons off to Spain for football clinics

COLLINS Mbesuma’s sons Morientes and Lineker have been selected to attend football clinics in Spain after making it into their respective teams.

Morientes, 12 who was named after former Spanish striker Fernando Morientes, plays in position number 10 while nine-year-old Lineker, like his father, plays in position number 9.

Lineker leaves for Spain this week with his club Supersport United while Morientes will go with the Gauteng select side in June.

In an interview from South Africa, Mbesuma said he was happy that his sons were following in his footsteps but said he always emphasised on discipline if they wanted to progress in their careers.

The Chipolopolo striker said the boys always reminded him that they wanted to go back and break the goal-scoring record he held both in the South African Premier Soccer League and the Zambia national team.

“It feels good but I always tell them, in football, it’s not all times that things will go your way. But do not give up, you have to be strong and fight. Then discipline is the key to success, never lie to yourself and always put God first,” Mbesuma said.

“…yalikaba (it’s tense) every day ati ‘Dad I want to break your record’,” said Mbesuma jokingly.

Mbesuma still holds the PSL record for most goals in a season (35 goals) during his first spell at Kaizer Chiefs between 2004-05 and has scored as many goals for the Chipolopolo over the years.

If successful, Mbesuma’s children could follow another former Zambian great Charles Musonda whose three sons are all football players in England.
