FORMER WIBA welterweight world champion Esther Phiri has hinted that she is retiring and diverting from boxing.
Esther, who earlier had hinted that she was yet to make a come back after a year-long break from the sport, said she did not want to have a bad ending in her boxing career. She, however, hinted that she was considering doing a coaching course in boxing so that she could train upcoming boxers from her community
I don’t want to have a bad ending. I don’t want to have maybe an injury. At least I have been in boxing for 14 years. I have to sit down and make a decision. I see a lot of activity around here so I want to set up a gym here in PHI near to Mtendere and start training young boxers – Esther said.
She said she would soon announce her retirement after consulting her coach, although he is not happy about her decision to hang the gloves.
I think soon I will announce that I have retired, but my coach is not happy about it but there are no hard feelings.
I need to talk to my coach seriously; that is when I will announce that I have retired or maybe I have diverted to another business. My coach can’t wait to see me in the gym but I am not up for the challenge, I just want to do something else now but I need to sit down with him,” Esther said.
She challenged youths in sport to remain disciplined and goal oriented.
“I will start with teaching girls the challenges of sport owing to my experience, something like that.I made it with the focus and discipline so even the upcoming sports men and women should maintain that and they will succeed,” said Esther.
