THE Zambia national boxing team may miss the Zone Four elite men and women boxing tournament due to lack of funds.
This means Zambia may also miss out on the African Confederation of Boxing tournament scheduled for Congo Brazzaville next month since the Zone four tournament is a prelude to the Congo Brazaville event which also acts as qualifiers for the AIBA world championships to be held in Hamburg, Germany.
Zambia Boxing Federation secretary general Bright Chomba confirmed the development in a statement.
“…it is with sadness that I wish to inform boxing lovers and fans that the new boxing national team that was selected last month, which is scheduled to participate in the Zone 4 elite men and women boxing tournament hangs in the balance due to lack of sponsorship from cooperating partners,” stated Chomba.
“The proposed budget still remains at zero commitment. Unfortunately, this tournament is a prelude to African confederation of boxing tournament to be held in Congo Brazzaville next Month. The AfBC tournament is a qualifying tournament for the AIBA world championships to be held in Hamburg Germany. It is sad that the new ZBF executive is not receiving much help despite reporting that we inherited empty coffers. We have not folded our arms and waiting for alms but we have approached relevant authorities to help us jump start our strategic plan.”
