Siavonga DC threatens arrest of contractors abandoning government works

SIAVONGA district commissioner Lovemore Kanyama says he will instruct the police to arrest Zambian contractors who have abandoned government project’s in Siavonga.

Speaking to the media after inspecting government projects in the area, Kanyama said some contractors had abandoned the projects after they were paid.

“This time, I am going to instruct the police to arrest contractors who have abandoned government projects in Siavonga. It’s very unfortunate that after they are paid, they have decided to chew the money and run from the district. We have a contractor who is building a government administration block; he ran away. He is nowhere to be seen,” Kanyama said.

He appealed to the contractors to get back to the construction sites before the police arrest them.

Kanyama also expressed disappointment with the slow pace at which Netweb Investment is constructing 10 medium cost government houses.

But a contractor who opted anonymity said his company had abandoned the project because the government was failing to fund it.

“The DC likes talking about things which he doesn’t understand well. How can I be on the construction site when government is failing to fund us? Let him instruct the police to arrest us. What offense have we committed when his government is broke?” asked the contractor.
