Acquit HH, defence lawyers ask court

LAWYERS representing UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in a case he is accused of insulting police officers on April 11 have asked the court to acquit him.

According to the final submissions for acquittal at judgment filed in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court, Hichilema, through his lawyers led by Vincent Malambo, urged magistrate Greenwell Malumani to dismiss the prosecution’s case and forthwith acquit their client and set him at liberty.

Magistrate Malumani set tomorrow for judgment after the prosecution closed its case and Hichilema elected to remain silent.

The defence wishes to submit at the outset that the prosecution has lamentably  failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt the essential elements of the offence preferred against the accused person and we thus pray that the court finds the accused not guilty on a charge and set him at liberty forthwith,
