ZESCO United will this afternoon look to consolidate their hold on top of Group C of the CAF Confederation Cup when they take on Recreative Libolo in Angola.
The Zambian club leads the group with six points followed by Al-Hilal Obied of Sudan and Smouha of Egypt in second and third position with four points apiece while Libolo have three points after three games played so far.
Zesco need to collect at least four points from their next two away fixtures starting with today’s assignment to reach the magical 10 points that would all but guarantee qualification to the quarter-finals of the continental club competition.
Zesco’s next group game will be away to Smouha followed by a final home fixture against Al-Hilal.
Both away fixtures are crucial to Zesco’s cause but the Zambian side faces a daunting task without influential players in Kondwani Mtonga, Jesse Were and Anthony Akumu who are sidelined due to suspension and injury.
“We will aim for a result but this is a very high game for us. We have big respect for Libolo but we have to finish these two games,” said Zesco coach Zlatko Krmpotic.
“…especially now, we are playing without Jesse, Anthony and Kondwani, but this is normal in football, we can’t cry over injury. The impact of these absent players is too much, every game we have to win but a draw is good. I must win and I believe in this team. We have many problems, players are tired with travelling and all that. We must play better to get a point in Angola.”
Captain Jacob Banda said his team would fight for full points to remain on top.
The match kicks-off at 16:00 hours Zambian time and will be live on Supersport TV.
