SPORTS minister Moses Mawere has challenged the senior national team to win trophies at international tournaments. During a press briefing at his office, Mawere said reaching the quarter-finals of the COSAFA should not be enough from the team.
Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda earlier this week hinted that it would not be very bad for his players to reach the last four of the ongoing tournament which is being hosted by South Africa.
But Mawere said it was important for the ‘Copper Bullets’ to meet the expectations of the Zambian people and the government.
“We have to do it. They have to meet the expectations of the Zambian people and the government. They have to just do it. They don’t have to go and just come out in the top four. We want them to participate and win trophies,” said Mawere.
On Saturday, Zambia face Botswana in the quarterfinals of this year’s COSAFA Cup.
The tournament began on June 25 and ends on July 9.
