LUSAKA’S biggest market, City Market, has caught fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but onlookers and some shop owners suspect an electrical fault.
Several people, among them those who sell at from the burnt market, watched helplessly as goods worth thousands of kwacha were being destroyed by the fire.
As the fire grew, fire tenders were nowhere in sight despite calling for their help.
Zambia Air Force fire tenders arrived on scene almost an hour after the fire had already caused extensive damage to the building and the goods.
“Nizadyesa bwanji bana banga ine [How I am going to feed my children now],” cried Esther Phiri, a marketeer whose stand is one of the affected.
The Lusaka City Council which owns the market was not readily available for comment.
