THE Health Professionals Council of Zambia says the matter in which incarcerated UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema complained about the conduct of Dr George Phiri who has insisted on taking care of him has been referred to a relevant committee.
According to sources, the registrar of the Health Professionals Council of Zambia a Mr B Bwalya has acknowledged receipt of Hichilema’s letter and indicated that the committee assigned to deal with his complaint would soon communicate the outcome.
Last month, Hichilema complained that Dr Phiri had breached the Health Professions Act for insisting to take care of him despite knowing that he had a personal physician.
The opposition leader wants Dr Phiri to be disciplined for professional misconduct.
Hichilema stated that Dr Phiri had accepted unlawful instructions to be dealing with his health matters without consulting him.
He stated that a Mr. Sikazwe, who is also alleged to be a doctor, authored a letter instructing Dr Phiri to take charge of his (Hichilema’s) health needs.
Hichilema also stated that Dr Phiri had informed him that he would continue taking care of him when he was taken back to Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility in Kabwe.
I wonder what else Dr Phiri knows about my unjustified incarceration, what is being planned by the State for him to have prior knowledge that I will be taken back to Mukobeko from Lusaka Central Correctional Facility. Please be rest assured that I was denied access to my personal physician whilst in Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility,
Hichilema added that he was ready to attend a hearing with his lawyers to substantiate his allegation against Dr Phiri.
