Lusaka cop in court for causing death of civilian

A POLICE officer of Moomba Police Post is in court for causing the death of a civilian whom he allegedly shot in January this year. Paul Ngama, 30 is charged with manslaughter contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

The allegation is that Ngama on January 27 in Lusaka, unlawfully caused the death of Edward Chanda Katongo. Ngama’s case has been allocated to magistrate Mary Chibanga’s court for explanation of the charge.

Postmortem results revealed that the deceased was shot at close range and that he died due to a gunshot wound at his back. According to the report, the gunshot fractured both scapulas and thoracic vertebra and further perforated both his lungs and aorta.

And a police report indicated that the accused person when questioned claimed to have followed a report of breaking at Lusumpuko market located at 10 miles area in Lusaka. However, further investigations revealed that there was no report or even an attempt to break into any shop at the said market and that a search on Ngama’s cell activity had proved to the contrary.
