COMMONWEALTH Secretary General Patricia Scotland QC today returned to Mukobeko Maximum Prison for another meeting with UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema who is incarcerated there.
Scotland was at Mukobeko Prison yesterday and held a meeting with Hichilema.
This morning, she went to State House to debrief President Edgar Lungu on her trip to Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison.
According to President Edgar Lungu’s special assistant for press and public relations Amos Chanda, Scotland communicated the outcome of her meeting with Hichilema and made some proposals on the way forward.
Ms Scotland has since returned to Kabwe to hold further talks and later in the day she will meet other leaders of the United Party for National Development (UPND),
“The Secretary General will in due course make an announcement once she has concluded the consultations with all relevant parties.”
On Saturday, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo met Hichilema at Mukobeko Prison after which he indicated that the gap between President Lungu and the opposition leader was narrowing.
The Zambian Catholic bishops, led by their president Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, held a meeting with President Lungu and later Hichilema in an efforts to secure his release and reconcile him with President Lungu
