Kasonde was a gallant son of Zambia – Lungu

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu today led scores of mourners at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Lusaka to pay their last respects to Dr Joseph Kasonde who died last Friday.

In his farewell speech to Dr Kasonde who saved as health minister until 2016, President Lungu said the renowned medical practitioner brought a lot of development to the country’s health sector.

“We are gathered at this solemn occasion to bid farewell to a very gallant son of the nation; renowned medical practitioner and politician, Dr Joseph Mwenya Kasonde, who passed away on Friday, 25th August, 2017 at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka,” President Lungu said.

“The nation has lost a true statesman who committed his life to the cause of seeing a healthy and productive people.”

He said the country’s medical fraternity had lost an individual who had great passion to serving communities.

“Dr Kasonde was a dedicated and highly qualified professional. He served this country with distinction. He tremendously contributed to the development of the country’s health care policies and public health management, as well as health legislation,” added President Lungu.

“He played a pivotal role in transforming the health sector when he was nominated member of parliament and appointed cabinet minister for the ministry of health on 29th September, 2011 by the late president his excellency Mr. Michael Sata, a position he held until 2016. As minister of health, Dr. Kasonde performed his duties with diligent and a rare sense of commitment, which should be emulated by all medical practitioners and the public service at large. His death has robbed us of his immense wisdom, vast experience and passion for quality health care for all. His life was indeed well accomplished,” said President Lungu.

And in his homily, parish priest Fr Charles Chilinda described Dr Kasonde as a humble and God fearing person who had great love for his family, friends and the people of Zambian.

Dr Kasonde who was put to rest at Memorial Park cemetery has left behind a wife, Mary, five daughters and grandchildren.
