Lungu dons the lihiya in Swaziland

President Edgar Lungu on Saturday joined Swaziland’s King Mswati III in wearing the traditional Swazi attire called the lihiya during that country’s International Trade Fair which runs  from September 2 to September 4, 2017.
President Lungu left for Swaziland on Friday to grace the Trade Fair yesterday, which coincided with the famed Reed Dance ceremony which hits its climax on September 3 and  4.

The  Reed Dance is a traditional dance and ceremony where up to 40 000 Swazi maidens gather and dance for the Queen Mother. This centuries old tradition is performed as a tribute to the Royal Family. The maidens dress up in brightly coloured attire and sing, dance together as they deliver the reed or umlanga to the Royal Residence.

The Swazi King usually makes use of the occasion to pick a prospective bride.
