Lusaka magistrate jails 2 men 5 years for unlawful possession of leopard skin

LUSAKA principal resident magistrate David Simusamba has convicted and slapped a five-year jail term on two men for being in possession of a leopard skin.

Mwanyala Mwale, 32 and Joseph Mwansa,
28 were charged with unlawful possession of prescribed trophy.

They both pleaded guilty and according to facts read by senior public prosecutor Zacks Yuma, investigation officers waylaid the duo who was trading in leopard skin in Lusaka Town centre after a tip off.

The two were charged and arrested after they failed to produce a certificate of ownership from the wildlife authority.

And the Leopard skin after a search was discovered in a bag.

The two pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed for mercy in mitigation.

They told magistrate Simusamba that they were married with children adding that they were taking care of siblings and relatives.

But magistrate Simusamba said the offence the duo committed was serious.

The offence you committed was very serious, my hands are tied; I will send you to prison for five years effective from day of arrest. The leopard skin will be forfeited to the State,” he ruled.

At this point, some of the relatives to the convicts began sobbing in court.
