A 43-YEAR-OLD man of senior chief Kalindawalo’s area in Petauke has committed suicide after assaulting his wife.
And a 34-year-old Sinda woman has been hospitalised after being shot during a dog elimination programme.
Eastern Province police commissioner Alex Chilufya confirmed the suicide incident, which occurred yesterday.
Chilufya said Moses Mwanza of Ndikula village seriously assaulted his 36-year-old wife Regina Phiri when he hit her with a hammer on the forehead following a domestic dispute.
He said when his wife fainted, Mwanza thought she had died, prompting him to take an insecticide.
Chilufya said the couple was later taken to Minga Mission Hospital where they were treated but Mwanza died.
He said Mwanza’s body was in Minga Mission Hospital awaiting post-mortem and burial.
And Chilufya said a woman of Sinda’s Mnyamazi section was hit by a stray bullet during the dog elimination programme which was being conducted by the veterinary department and the council yesterday.
He said Alice Tembo, a passerby, was accidentally shot at by an officer during the operation.
Chilufya said Tembo sustained nine pallet gunshot wounds in the neck, left side of the chest, left arm and abdomen.
The victim was rushed to St Francis Hospital where she underwent surgery to extract the pallets from her body and is reportedly in a stable condition, according to Chilufya.
