ZAMBIA coach Mumamba Numba says he is happy with the way his team has progressed during the Mopani/COSAFA Under-20 championship despite bowing out of the tournament in the first round.
Hosts and holders Zambia salvaged some pride, beating Swaziland 2-0 in the last group match at Nkana Stadium on Monday with both goals coming from Fransisco Mwepu in the second half.
Zambia lost the opening game 2-0 to Uganda and played to a goalless draw against Malawi in the next game which ended hopes of the title defence.
In his post-match comments, Numba, whose team consists of majority U-17 players, said he was proud of his team’s display.
“The game was evenly contested, the boys accounted very well. It’s good we utilised the chances we created. I am happy with the way the team is progressing. There has been a lot of improvement in the three games we have played,” said Numba.
His opposite number Lesley Notsi said the COSAFA tournament was good for the development of his young team into senior players in the future.
Uganda and Malawi have progressed to the semi-finals after drawing their last game 1-1, with Uganda progressing as group winners on goal difference.
