Chanda Kasolo, the permanent secretary for Eastern Province, says he is disappointed with the performance of Sable Contractors on Chipata township roads.
“You know Sable, we talk to (him), you shout at him, the (provincial) minister does the same and he says, ‘No, no, I will do it’. When you shout at him, suddenly machines appear, they start doing something. You look the other way, the machines are moved on to another place,” said Kasolo. “I really question some of my fellow civil servants on how and why they are awarding contracts because for me, I wouldn’t give a contract when a contractor hasn’t finished another contract. I think my friends who have been giving these contracts, they have something wrong with them and maybe it’s their pocket but we will do our best. If we cannot cancel, we will push him until he does the job.”
This is the price the Zambian people are paying for allowing corruption to take root. Where there’s corruption, there’s no accountability. Chanda says he really questions some of his fellow civil servants on how and why they are awarding contracts to Sable, a contractor who is failing to finish works. Chanda says there’s something wrong with them, maybe it’s their pockets.
It cannot be denied that Sable has continued to get contracts despite a long record very poor performance. There can only be one explanation for this: corruption! Where corruption is the order of the day, impunity becomes the norm. The corrupt become untouchable. They get away with everything.
When the key political leadership of a country is corrupt, those dealing with them get away with everything. Impunity sets in.
And as we have stated before, power with impunity is frightening.
Where corruption is the order of the day, impunity becomes the norm. The corrupt become untouchable. They get away with everything. When the key political leadership of a country is corrupt, those dealing with them get away with everything. Impunity sets in.
And as we have stated before, power with impunity is frightening. We are dealing with a very corrupt political leadership and civil service. And we shouldn’t be deceived by them pretending to be devout Christians. Good Christians, like Christ, don’t engage in corruption; they tell lies. These are nothing but corrupt and shameless hypocrites who think being great is having a lot of stolen money and property. They don’t realise that the price of greatness is responsibility.
Sometimes they even say very good things one who knows how crooked they are can’t believe it’s coming out of their mouths. But we all know that the only thing worse than a liar is a liar that’s also a hypocrite.
These are people who can’t be trusted anymore. Albert Einstein said, “Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” It is said that when you’re a liar, a person of low moral fortitude, really any explanation you need to be true can be true. Especially if you’re smart enough. You can figure out a way to justify anything.
A liar begins with making falsehood appear like truth, and ends with making truth itself appear like falsehood.
They pretend to be developing the country’s infrastructure when their true motivation for all this is to steal public funds through dubious and unaccountable contracts.
Honesty is of God and dishonesty of the devil; the devil was a liar from the beginning. They say the only vice that cannot be forgiven is hypocrisy and that the repentance of a hypocrite is itself hypocrisy. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core. A hypocrite despises those whom he deceives, but has no respect for himself. He would make a dupe of himself too, if he could.
We need to always call a liar a liar, a corrupt a corrupt and a hypocrite a hypocrite. Liars, corrupt elements, hypocrites get offended by the truth because truth removes their mask. But if you wear a mask for too long, there will come a time when you cannot remove it without removing your face. And it is not the monsters we should be afraid of; it is the people that don’t recognize the same monsters inside of themselves.
It is said that when dealing with two-faced people, it is difficult to know which face is uglier – the real one or the manufactured one.
Each one of us needs to stand up to this corruption, hypocrisy. If you don’t, the corrupt, hypocrites will teach, run free and spread their corruption like a disease. Stand up for truth. If you don’t, then there is no truth to your existence. If you don’t stand up for all that is right, then understand that you are part of the reason why there is so much corruption, deceit, lies, hypocrisy in this country.
