FORMER World Boxing Champion Esther Phiri says she is happy that men in uniform will be allowed to turn professional without hindrance.
She told The Mast in an interview that the decision by the military to allow the officers to engage in professional boxing was a great move for the sport.
“This is great news. It used to take long for the boxers to get professional but now it will be easy. Some officers never wanted to lose their jobs so they never went pro[fessional], making it difficult for them to fully explore their talents,” Esther said.
“I say thank you to the men in uniform for having allowed their servicemen to make our country proud. I am happy that they have decided to go this route.”
Esther, however, declined to comment on whether or not she would return to the ring, saying she would soon address the issue once she had made up her mind.
