GOVERNMENT has allocated 118 solar powered hammer mills to local farmers in Kapiri Mposhi district as part of the Presidential Empowerment Initiative.
The hammer mills would be supplied to various cooperative societies in the district.
Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry district coordinator Lazarus Nyirenda disclosed in an interview that 21 cooperative societies had so far successfully applied for the hammer mills in the district.
“Slabs have been constructed for the installation of hammer mills for five cooperatives that have already been given the hammer mills after meeting the requirements and we are analysing more applications,” Nyirenda said.
He disclosed that the contractor had already moved on site to install the hammer mills.
Nyirenda said the hammer mills would be strategically located in high maize production and populated areas to ensure their sustainability.
He observed that once installed, the hammer mills would not only create jobs but also considerably reduce the price of mealie-meal and create ready market for maize from farmers in the district.
Nyirenda challenged cooperative societies in the area to take advantage of the initiative and apply for the hammer mills to supplement their income generating capacity.
“Cooperatives need to secure own land and be duly registered for them to apply and benefit from the initiative…this is a viable undertaking for cooperatives to improve their income,” said Nyirenda.
