Mumba goes in 3 months for giving false information to public officer

LUSAKA principal resident magistrate David Simusamba has sentenced MMD leader Nevers Mumba to three months simple imprisonment for giving false information to police officers at ZNBC’s Mass Media Complex.

Magistrate Simusamba, however, acquitted Mumba of criminal tresspass.

In September 2016, Mumba went to ZNBC to inquire about a UPND petition story and told the police officers manning the entrance that he had an appointment with the news editor.

But witnesses from ZNBC denied ever giving Mumba an appointment to see the news editor.

Magistrate Simusamba convicted him of giving false information to the police officers, saying the facts from prosecution established that he was guilty of the offence.

He said the offence was committed in a political environment, endangering the lives of innocent citizens.

Magistrate Simusamba said he was sending Mumba to prison in order to restrain would-be offenders from committing similar offence.
