CHIEF Chitambo of the Lala speaking people in Central Province has said that Zambians are yearning for a credible and strong opposition political party.
And Chief Chitambo has advised UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to remain focused and mobilise ahead of the 2021 presidential election.
In an interview, chief Chitambo said Zambia was still lacking an opposition political party that would offer checks and balances to the ruling party.
“We are not saying that we should revert to a one party state kind of government. We have to support and promote multiparty democracy…We need plural politics,” said chief Chitambo, who is Frederick Chisenga. “But unfortunately, Zambia is still lacking an opposition political party that can offer checks and balances to the ruling party, an opposition political party that can engage in constructive criticism. Zambians are yearning for a credible and strong opposition political party.”
And the traditional leader said the impeachment motion against President Edgar Lungu was “a waste of time” and advised Hichilema to instead focus on 2021.
“That impeachment motion that has been initiated by UPND members of parliament will not yield the UPND’s desired results. It is a waste of time because it lacks solid grounds to warrant the impeachment of the sitting Head of State and it lacks the support of majority PF members of parliament,” said chief Chitambo.
“Instead of pushing for an impeachment motion and wasting time, Hakainde Hichilema should channel his energies towards party mobilisation. Let him go flat out and mobilise the party ahead of the 2021 elections. Instead of being ill advised, Hakainde Hichilema should remain focused. That is when he can rule if his time comes. He should also learn to consult the traditional leadership.”
