AFTER four rounds of play offs, South Africa’s JJ Senekal put an eagle to win the Zanaco Masters 2018 golf tournament at the Lusaka Golf Club.
It was a two horse race for close to two hours with Andre De Decker not until Senekal made an eagle from the right bunker sending the crowd into cheers and jubilation.
This was the first time in the history of the Zanaco Masters that four players had made it into the play offs.
They all finished the four-day tournament at 274 out of the 288 total putts at 14 under.
In the first round of the play offs, Alex Haindl and Jaco Ahlers were eliminated after they played on par 5 while Senekal and Decker both went with a birdy.
Senekal vowed to come back to the course and defend his title next year.
“ I love this country and love being here and I promise to come back and defend my title. The competition was very tough but only one winner and luckily that was me,” said a shivering Senekal, who could not believe he had carried the day.
Last year, Senekal, who during the same tournament came out 7th, this time took home R317,000 while Decker, Ahlers and Alex all pocketed R148,266.67 each for tying at second position.
Zambia’s own Madalitso Muthiya finished as the 35th after taking home a bogey on the last hole.
