EASTERN Province Civil Society for Poverty Reduction coordinator Maxson Nkhoma says President Edgar Lungu must ensure equity in the creation of new districts so that all regions and provinces are seen to be on the same development trajectory.
Commenting on the creation of new districts, Nkhoma welcomed the development.
“CSPR is optimistic that stakeholders will understand that the creation of new districts is an on-going undertaking of central government and a preserve of the Head of State in line with the constitution. It is not possible to create new more districts at the same time across the country as it is costly but that progressively the Head of State must ensure equity in the creation of new districts so that all regions and provinces are seen to be on the same development trajectory,” he stated.
He stated that the creation of new districts does not only help to bring government services close to the people but help the people to help in decision making through creation of local councils and the district development coordinating committees.
CSPR appealed to the government to improve funding to newly created districts so that development could be accelerated.
“We are concerned with the slow pace at which districts like Sinda and Vubwi have been developing due to lack of funds to complete on-going infrastructure development works,” stated Nkhoma.
The newly created districts are Chasefu, Chipangali, Kasenengwa, Chifunabuli, Lumezi and Lusangazi.
