Zambia Police withdraw officers from Feni after rioting residents destroy police post

THE Eastern Province police command has withdrawn officers from Feni sub-centre following the riot that left the local police post destroyed.
The residents of Feni ran amok and destroyed the police post on Friday after a suspected mentally retarded Malawian murdered a Zambian, who had confronted him for allegedly stealing his chicken.
The accused, who had bolted after murdering the Zambian, the was only apprehended by the local people in Abelo village before handing him over to police.
The local people rioted following the polices’ delay to arrest the suspect and the move by the police to prevent them from lynching the Malawian.
And Sakala said the behaviour of the people of Feni was uncalled for.
“We have withdrawn the services of the police officers at Feni and they will be taken there when their services are needed,” he said.
Sakala said Feni police post had two police officers who were removed from the station after the riot.
The suspect, who was arrested on Friday, would undergo medical check-up at Chainama to ascertain his mental status.
Luangeni member of parliament Charles Zulu has since called for thorough screening of foreigners who enter Zambia without papers.
Zulu said some people come to Zambia after committing crimes in their countries.
