ATHLETES Kabange Mupopo and Kennedy Luchembe have been nominated in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Regional 5 third edition of Regional Annual Awards (RASA 2018) , scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa on May 26.
Chipolopolo striker Patson Daka, chess player Lubuto Bwalya, journalist Mathews Kabamba, coach Beston Chambeshi (football) and the U20 Football National Team (sports team of the year category), have also been nominated in different categories.
African 400m women champion Mupopo, who is part of the Podium Performance Programme (PPP), has been placed in the sportswoman of the year category together with South Africa’s Caster Semenya (athletics), Onkemetse Francis (chess), of Namibia and Tabitha Chawinga (football), of Malawi among others.
Luchembe, the 2017 Youth commonwealth Games gold medalist and also part of the PPP, will compete against Karabo Sibanda (athletics) of Botswana, Tebboho Lelimo (chess) of Lesotho among others.
Podium Performance Programme (PPP) coordinator Sombwa Musunsa said the two athletes were nominated in the prestigious awards which he says will inspire the athletes to continue training hard and mint medals for Zambia.
Musunsa said, according to the PPP Facebook page, that he looks forward to see more athletes who were part of the Podium Performance Programme getting nominated in similar awards.
