Opposition in Zambia is fragmented – NDC

NATIONAL Democratic Congress Eastern Province chairperson Samuel Lugomo Phiri has said the opposition in Zambia is fragmented. And Phiri says Zambians have suffered a lot at the hands of the PF government. Meanwhile, the former PF official says he is the NDC candidate in the forthcoming Chipangali district council chairperson elections.

In an interview in Chipata, Phiri said there was need for opposition to change the game plan by putting up a strong strategy which was lacking currently. He said it was true that opposition political parties in the country were fragmented and the only way to kick out PF from power was to unite.

“The opposition political parties in the country must unite as it is the only way to defeat PF government. It is true that the opposition is fragmented and the only way to remove PF is to come together, to unite,” Phiri said.

He said there was need for opposition political leaders in the country to come up with a memorandum of understanding without delay and learn to support each other in their strongholds during elections. Phiri explained that opposition political parties should exhibit unity by sharing podiums like what Chishimba Kambwili did with Hakainde Hichilema in Chilanga Constituency where UPND lost the seat.

He said what was exhibited by the two leaders in the Chilanga by-election was the way to go for the opposition. And Phiri said NDC would participate in all the by-elections scheduled for next month. He indicated that he was the opposition party’s candidate for position of chairman of Chipangali district council.

“As for Chipangali district, I am the candidate for NDC for the Chipangali district council chairperson and the party is going to participate in all the by-elections in the province,”  Phiri said.

He, however, disclosed that NDC had so far received one application for Kasenengwa district council chairperson election. Phiri named the applicant as Gabriel Mbewe, the former MMD Kasenengwa Constituency chairperson, and that the party was still waiting for more individuals to apply.
