FIFTEEN students from Chipata Trades Training Institute on Friday pleaded not guilty to riotous behaviour and damaging school property valued at over K216, 000.
The 15 include Billy Sikwenda Lungu, Arthur Mubiana, Bernard Bwalya, Hassan Phiri, Vincent Chimfwembe, Jackson Zulu, Prince Phiri, Moses Sinyangwe, Joseph Mukuka,Manjimela Chiyenga, Sean Chbwe, Poties Muyunda, Gilbert Siwo, Cosmas Zulu and Joseph Nkhata.
The accused that appeared before magistrate Philip Mpundu are charged with riotous injuring buildings contrary to section 82 as read with section 81 chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
It is alleged that on June 11, 2018, in Chipata, the accused, whilst being riotously assembled, wilfully and unlawfully damaged windowpanes and windscreens to four vehicles.
The damaged property, belonging to Chipata Trades Training Institute, is valued at K216,286.
After entering a plea of not guilty, their lawyer, Blessings Mbewe, from Legal Aid Board applied for bail, which was granted.
In his application, Mbewe said the accused were of fixed abode and that not all of them were Chipata residents.
Magistrate Mpundu gave the accused K5,000 bail in their own recognizance with two working sureties in the like sum and similar conditions.
The matter was adjourned to June 27, 2018 for commencement of trail.
