Sikanze cop commits suicide after assaulting fellow officer

A POLICE officer from Sikanze camp has committed suicide by shooting himself with an AK 47 rifle after allegedly assaulting his fellow police officer.

Police public relations officer Esther Mwaata Katongo identified the deceased as Sergeant Charles Mukupa of Mobile Unit operational camp in Sikanze, who committed suicide on Wednesday morning by shooting himself through the mouth using an AK 47.

Katongo stated that before taking his life, the deceased is alleged to have assaulted a fellow officer, also a sergeant, and the matter was reported to Kabwata Police and he was charged with assault.

She stated that Mukupa had negotiated with his counterpart to have the matter settled outside court and was charged K35,000.

“His attempt to have a down payment paid failed the day before he committed suicide as the complainant demanded to have the money paid in full. He was discovered dead yesterday and his body was taken to UTH mortuary,” stated Katongo.

Meanwhile, police in Petauke have arrested a 19-year-old boy for insulting chief Nyamphande of the Nsenga people.

Eastern Province police commissioner Luckson Sakala said police arrested one person while another was on the run.

Sakala said police received a report that chief Nyamphande was insulted by two known persons on June 19.

“We received a report from chief Nyamphande of Petauke district that
he was insulted by two known person from his chiefdom on the 19th June 2018 in the early hours at Nyamphande headquarters. The chief went to report to Petauke police station about these two subjects who were misbehaving,” he said.

Sakala said upon receiving a report, police rushed to the area and managed to apprehend a suspect named Zabu Tembo of Chipampala village in the same chiefdom.

He said Tembo had been charged with use of insulting language and would appear in court soon while police have launched a manhunt for
the other suspect who is at large.
