PF picks Miles for Lusaka mayoral poll

THE governing PF secretariat was yesterday mobbed by its animated and somewhat belligerent supporters who gathered to hear the party’s adopted candidate for the forthcoming Lusaka mayoral by-election slated for July 26.
And the PF has adopted its former Matero member of parliament Miles Sampa as a mayoral candidate for Lusaka.
By 15:00 hours, journalists had gathered at the PF secretariat on along Lumumba road in Lusaka, in readiness for the party secretary general Davies Mwila’s at 15:30 hours.

However, Mwila, tourism minister Charles Banda, PF media director Sunday Chanda and his deputy Antonio Mwanza emerged from the secretariat at 15:33 hours and drove out, without a word to the waiting journalists.
It emerged, among journalists, that the media briefing had been deferred. Outside the ruling party’s usually restive secretariat, supporters, apparently for different mayoral hopefuls, who came in buses, were seen roaming. By then, grapevine was indicating that Sampa, a former deputy minister of finance and at one time a Republican presidential hopeful, had been adopted for the mayoral post.

A horde of them was heard lamenting that “the party cannot adopt someone we have not been working with.”
Upon seeing that senior party leaders had all left the secretariat, the rowdy cadres left, too. Minutes later, Smart Eagles, a PF-aligned online media site, streamed live Mwila confirming Sampa as the governing party’s mayoral candidate for Lusaka.
“… for Lusaka, we’ve adopted former MP for Matero, Honourable Miles Sampa,” disclosed Mwila, adding that PF member of the Central Committee Paul Moonga would be Sampa’s campaign manager and deputised by Lusaka Province minister Bowman Lusambo.

Meanwhile, Sunday Chanda issued a press statement yesterday, stating that the PF Central Committee had concluded the adoption process for upcoming by-elections
“The secretary general of the party Hon Davies Mwila wishes to announce that the Central Committee of the Patriotic Front met today, 23rd June 2018 and chaired by the Republican President and party president His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu to consider applications for adoptions in the Lusaka mayoral race, council chairperson by-elections and local government by-elections,” he stated.

Chanda stated that Mwila wished to state that the Central Committee “also considered that in the case of Hon Sampa, he had shown repentance for his past deeds and therefore forgiven in the spirit of uniting the party and embracing new members.”

“Hon Mwila has since called on all party members to embrace Hon Sampa. On behalf of the Central Committee, Hon Mwila has thanked all those who had applied to be considered on the PF ticket as each one of them made the process competitive and democratic. [The] Central Committee has since called on all aspiring candidates to join the campaign teams and work towards the party’s victory on 26th July, 2018.” stated Chanda.
