It’s foolish for anyone not to want a good and strong opposition, says UPND Southern Province secretary Winnerson N’guni
And N’guni says Edgar Lungu is having an illusion that when Hakainde Hichilema becomes Head of State, he will seek revenge for having been mistreated on trumped-up charges.
N’guni says Hichilema will uphold the Constitution and respect the Judiciary when he is elected Head of State.
Speaking during a media briefing at the UPND district party office in Livingstone, N’guni said fools were those that do not want a good and strong opposition so that they can steal freely with impunity.
“What is worrying Mr Lungu the most as far as we are concerned is the crimes he has committed against the Zambian people and against Mr Hichilema. He is living with an illusion that if HH becomes Head of State, he will seek revenge against him for having mistreated him as a Zambian citizen on trumped-up charges,” N’guni said.
He said the UPND leader harbours no hatred for the President.
N’guni, however, indicated that the Zambian people would seek redress for all the injustices that have been perpetrated by the PF leadership.
“We want to assure Mr Lungu that HH is a man who harbours no hatred as Mr Lungu does. Mr Hichilema is a man of God and will respect the biblical teachings. In Romans 12 verse 19, God tells us to never take revenge, but to leave it to Him. God is the ultimate judge and when we seek revenge, we are taking His place. When we become overwhelmed with what others have done wrong, we become filled with anger and find ourselves focused on hate. God’s love and forgiveness is seen in our ability to love and forgive,” he said.
“However, the Bible also adds that ‘thou shall not steal’ and the Zambian Constitution also recognises the fact that stealing is a punishable offence with stiffer penalties of imprisonment. So for Mr Lungu and his minions, the government of Hakainde Hichilema will not seek revenge but the Zambian people will seek redress through the courts of law if and when those who serve in the PF have been found with cases to answer on theft of public funds.
“We already have one such instance where the PF ministers were ordered by the Constitutional Court to pay back the money they used prior to the 2016 general elections when they remained in office…this is a clear case of abuse of power and theft and any well-meaning government needs to bring to book whoever is refusing to abide to the courts directives,” N’guni said.
He said President Lungu’s call for the UPND to change its leadership was a sign that he was afraid of the opposition leader.
N’guni added that Hichilema would clean up the institutions of government that have been invaded by the PF.
“Government institutions are dysfunctional and lawless. Look at what is happening in the police service, the judiciary, it’s heartbreaking because these institutions have broken down and impunity is everywhere. Corruption is ever increasing all because of the breakdown in the police and judiciary. The truth is that the PF is no longer a political party. It is a party on paper, but in reality it is criminal gang,” said N’guni.
