A-35-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to seven months imprisonment by a Kitwe Magistrates’ Court for stealing a cell phone.
Kelvin Chabala of Kitwe was charged with theft contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Allegations were that on July 25, 2018, Chabala stole a cell phone in Kitwe worth K450, the property of Victor Munje.
Appearing before magistrate Jane Mbulo for plea, Chabala pleaded guilty to the offence.
Magistrate Mbulo said upon the accused person’s own admission of the offence, she had found him guilty as charged and convicted him accordingly.
In mitigation Chabala begged the court to exercise maximum leniency on him as he was remorseful for his actions.
He also told court that he had left a pregnant woman back home who would suffer if he was put behind bars.
But magistrate Mbulo said she was sentencing Chabala to seven months imprisonment with hard labour as he had committed a serious criminal offence.
She further said he had a right to appeal to a higher court within fourteen days.
