OPERATION Young Vote executive director Guess Nyirenda says ethnic and tribal divisions propagated by Sinda independent member of parliament Masautso Tembo and PF are sad and unfortunate.
Tembo, who is PF deputy campaign manager in this week’s Kasenengwa by-election, went tribal in his campaigns, telling the people in the constituency to only vote for President Edgar Lungu, their own and not UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema because he was Tonga and was not their own. Commenting on Tembo’s utterances, Nyirenda, in a statement, stated that being a lawmaker, Tembo was supposed to be above board and lead by example.
“The act of tribalism and hate for Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the Tonga people of Southern Province propagated by Mr Masauso Tembo
during the campaign meetings in Kasenengwa Constituency for the forth-coming parliamentary by-election slated for the 6th of September 2018 is condemnable and out of this world. The utterances by Mr Tembo leave a lot to be desired for someone who is supposed to be a Honorable MP and lawmaker. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the electorate and women in particular to implant ethic divisions among them with impunity in the name of campaigns is evil to say the least,” Nyirenda stated.
He stated that Zambians have lived together regardless of their ethnicity and tribe.
“What makes the fear or is it hate for Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND more vivid is that even when he is not contesting or fielding any candidate in the Kasenengwa parliamentary by- election, he and his party are at the centre of the PF’s campaign. The question is, why shamelessly champion and exhibits such tribal hate for Mr. HH and the UPND? Such negative and tribal utterances and positions taken by those privileged to lead others such as Mr Masauso Tembo are nothing but schemes to demonise Hakainde Hichilema and the people of Southern Province of Zambia anywhere in the country at every opportunity. This cannot and should not be allowed space in our politics especially in this era. The MP and all his associates and accomplices must be condemned by impartial and objective citizens and stakeholders,” Nyirenda stated.
He stated Tembo should apologise for his tribal remarks.
“As Operation Young Vote (OYV), we strongly condemn anything and anyone denting our democratic governance space with ethnicity or any
vice not befitting society. We, therefore, demand that Mr Masauso Tembo apologises to Mr Hakainde Hichilema, the UPND, the people of Southern Province and the Zambians as a whole and further retract the said statement without delay,”
