Choma boys, girls shine at COPA

SOUTHERN Province schools yesterday outplayed eighteen other teams from around the country to be crowned champions of the 2018 COPA Coca-Cola secondary schools tournament. The first team to secure a crown was Choma Day Secondary School, with the girls team beating Lusaka’s Arakan Secondary School girls 1-0 before Choma Boarding Secondary School equally beat High Ridge Secondary School 1-0.

Speaking to the media after the tournament, Choma Boarding Secondary School team coach Hamududu Maimbo said it was a tough tournament.

“…the tournament was played in two days, which means the boys and girls played a lot of games within a short period and it took a toll on them. We are likely to be here even next year because most of these boys are in grade 10. But what is difficult is to qualify from the province to come to the finals,” said Hamududu.

And coach for High Ridge Secondary School team for boys Arthur Dube said he hoped his team would return to the competition next year and do better. This was the 26th edition of the COPA Coca-Cola Under 15 soccer tournament finals and the first time that girl’s teams were taking part.

Each winning team took away K30,000, with runners up in both categories getting K 15, 000. The COPA Coca-Cola schools tournament is an annual, grassroots football event which aims to identify, nurture and reward the best  in young footballing talent from schools.
