Are we really independent?
Dear Editor,
As we commemorate Zambia’s independence, I am compelled to ask whether we are really independent.
Are we really independent when only a few have the freedom of living in a dignified manner while 65% of our population have been condemned to a life of abject poverty?
Are we really independent when citizens cannot even have the freedom to discuss issues of national interest like the national budget without getting arrested?
Are we really independent when those who peacefully protest against government lavish spending are met with the full wrath of the law and slapped with all sorts of charges?
Are we really independent when parastatals like ZNBC and ZESCO seem to have been taken over by foreigners?
Are we really independent when those stealing donor funds meant to alleviate poverty go scot-free?
Are we really independent when we have a government that feel the need to purchase a luxurious presidential private jet after pledging austerity measures?
Are we really independent when our students are getting killed by our police in cold blood?
Are we really independent when most of our veteran freedom fighters are living like social paupers?
It is no moot point that without economic independence, no nation can achieve national security.
Let this be our reflection as we observe this year’s independence day.
