Simfukwe eyes Nigeria golf win

GOLFER Aaron Simfukwe Jr says he is hopeful of winning one of two major tournaments scheduled for Nigeria next month. Simfukwe, who fared badly in the Kampala tournament in August, said in an interview yesterday that he hopes to make amends by winning one of the West African Tour tournaments to be played over two weeks with a combined prize money of US$105,000.

He said he had opted to go Nigeria because he believes he stands a better chance of winning to earn money for next year’s programmes. Simfukwe said he has intensified his weekly training programme.

“I am going to Nigeria for the West African Tour. The tournament will be played over two weeks back-to-back. Everyone is going to Malawi but I have chosen to go to Nigeria because I am a member there and I think I stand a better chance to win so that I make money for next year,” said Simfukwe.

“Training is tough now, I have to hit 2,000 balls per week. From Tuesday to Friday, I have to do that and spend Saturday and Sunday on the course. Plus I am also running 12 kilometres every morning because you also need endurance on the course. But my game is back. I just have to work more on my short game, putting and chipping.”
