Lusaka has over 2,900 inmates

THE Zambia Correctional Service has told a Lusaka High Court judge that there are 2,971 inmates detained in various prisons in Lusaka province.

Lusaka Central Prison deputy officer in-charge Aubrey Silupya said the inmates in prison are facing different charges among them, murder and rape.

He said this when he presented a report on the state of the prisons in Lusaka during the opening of the Lusaka High Court criminal session.

Silupya told judge Egispo Mwansa that Lusaka Correctional Facility had the highest number of inmates which was currently at 1,224 while Kamwala Remand had 530.

The officer said Lusaka Central Female Correctional Facility had 162 inmates.

Silupya said the statistics existed as of 06.30 hours on Monday.
