Opposition party is a 24/7 job holding govt accountable – Tembo

THE fact that we are working on dialogue and reconciliation should not tempt us to go on holiday as opposition political parties and sleep in our duties of holding the government of the day accountable, Sean Tembo has cautioned.

Tembo, the Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) president, said it was gratifying that a lot of significant steps had been made towards dialogue and reconciliation.

He, however, said it must be noted that inasmuch as there were overt efforts between the opposition leaders and those in the ruling party, towards dialogue and reconciliation, “we still remain opposition political parties.”

“We have noted a lot of significant steps that have been taken in that direction. I would like to congratulate the UPND president Mr [Hakainde] Hichilema for being able to meet with the Republican President Mr [Edgar] Lungu. Notwithstanding that, it must be noted that inasmuch as we are working towards dialogue and reconciliation, we still remain opposition political parties,” Tembo said.

“The fact that we are working on dialogue and reconciliation should not tempt us to go on holiday as opposition political parties and sleep in our duties of holding the government of the day accountable.”

He added that being an opposition political party was “a 24 hours a day job.”

“We always have to hold the government of the day accountable. The moment we sleep on our job, then the government will go out of its way to abuse its position of being in control of the resources of this country,” Tembo said.

He regretted that most of the times, opposition political parties in the country did not collaborate.

“To a large extent, I feel that we pay too much attention to the things that we don’t share in common – we pay too much attention to things that we don’t agree on as opposed to the things that we agree on,” Tembo lamented.

He indicated that different political parties could literally not agree 100 per cent on issues.

“Even identical twins are usually disagreeable on a number of issues…. So, my appeal to the United Party for National Development is that we as opposition in this country should collaborate more, we should reduce on focusing on issues that divide us and focus on issues that unite us,” said Tembo./
