Chipata resident pleads not guilty to conspiracy to kill Mpezeni

A CHIPATA resident yesterday pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy to kill Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people.

Before Lusaka judge Gertrude Chawatama who is sitting in Chipata was Zenasi Dube of Mwami border area.

After entering plea of not guilty, judge Chawatama adjourned the matter to Monday, February 11, 2019 to decide on trial date and the venue.

The state also amended information relating to the particulars of the offence.

According to the new information, Dube and another person unknown between January 24 and March 13, 2018 conspired to murder David Jere.

The matter was adjourned from the previous High Court session by Judge William Mweemba after defence counsel John Phiri from Legal aid told the court that he was not ready to proceed with the matter for professional reasons.

Phiri applied that the matter be adjourned to this session to allow for the accused to find a new lawyer.

When the case came up yesterday, Paramount chief Mpezen’s headmen Maulao, Lupoko and Mushamunya were before court.

The matter was committed to the High Court for summary trial by the Chipata Magistrates’ last year.
