PF’s complaint against Prime TV is laughable

It’s laughable that the Patriotic Front has complained to Prime TV management over what it termed biased and unethical coverage of the just-ended Sesheke parliamentary by-election.
Have they mistaken Prime TV for ZNBC Television?

It seems hypocrites really get offended by the truth.

Proclaim the truth and do not be silent through fear.

What they are trying to do to Prime TV is unjust and deserves to be denounced. And it’s not unpatriotic to denounce an injustice committed on our behalf; perhaps it’s the most patriotic thing we can do.

The Patriotic Front runs and controls the most biased and abused news media outlets. Look at how they are abusing ZNBC radio and television stations! Look at how biased ZNBC radio and television stations are! They hardly cover the opposition and dissenting voices. And when they do it is totally in a biased way which makes the opposition or dissenting voices look bad or stupid.

Noam Chomsky once remarked, “For the powerful, crimes are those that others commit.”

They are right when they say that those who plead their cause in the absence of an opponent can invent to their heart’s content, can pontificate without taking into account the opposite point of view and keep the best arguments for themselves, for aggressors are always quick to attack those who have no means of defence.

The Independent Broadcasting Authority is a kangaroo court of spineless pimps whose only discernible preoccupation is to please the Patriotic Front leadership and keep their jobs. And they do so in the most dishonest, unfair of ways.

These are people who have unjustifiably closed radio and television stations to please the Patriotic Front leaders and increase their electoral chances.

Prime TV is one of the last few radio and television stations to give a meaningful voice to the opposition and dissenting views. Most radio and television stations in the country have cowered in to protect their broadcasting licences. The IBA so easily suspends or withdraws broadcasting licences to please or in favour of the Patriotic Front leaders.

What the Patriotic Front is after is silencing the critical voice. Harry Truman warned: “Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.”

This is where we are headed. They want a media that doesn’t expose their violence, abuses and other crimes of their league.

John Scalzi said, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the things they read or watch, or listen to, or taste, or whatever. They’re also entitled to express them online. Sometimes those opinions will be ones you don’t like. Sometimes those opinions won’t be very nice. The people expressing those may be, but are not always, assholes. However, if your solution to this problem is to vex, annoy, threaten or harass them, you are almost certainly a bigger asshole. You may also be twelve. You are not responsible for anyone else’s actions or karma, but you are responsible for your own. So leave them alone and go about your own life.”

All Zambians of goodwill should come out and defend Prime TV. You may not like what Prime TV does but you have a duty to defend it. This is so because if you don’t stand up for the stuff you don’t like, when they come for the stuff you do like, you’ve already lost.

From the Patriotic Front’s harassment of Prime TV, it is clear that there is perhaps no phenomenon which contains so much destructive feeling as ‘moral indignation,’ which permits hate to be acted out under the guise of virtue.

Our freedoms are vanishing by the day. This regime is increasingly becoming unrestrained, brutal and tyrannical. If you do not get active to take a stand now against all that is wrong in our country while we still can, then maybe one of your children may elect to do so in the future, when it will be far more riskier – and much, much harder.

If there would be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.
