Where are the voices of wisdom, decency in PF?

The nation is eagerly waiting for voices of wisdom to openly emerge from the Patriotic Front supporters, cadres and leaders saying, ‘We can’t continue on this path of destruction and self-annihilation.’

We saw such a voice in the MMD when Frederick Chiluba lost the support of party cadres, leaders and cabinet members, including his vice-president of the Republic. They told Chiluba, ‘Not a third term in our name.’

And that was the end of Chiluba’s rule – his third term bid failed.

There’s so much that is wrong with Edgar Lungu’s rule – unprecedented very high levels of corruption, unbridled intolerance, violence, destruction of the credibility of all state institutions and many other abuses of power. On all scores, this is the worst government Zambians have ever seen since independence. These are not leaders but a batch of highly reckless and greedy fellows. There’s nothing they are afraid of doing. All the things our previous regimes have been scared to do, these have done. They have no restraint or scruples. They don’t in any way realise that the exercise of power must be a constant practice of self limitation and modesty.

It’s very difficult to understand how and why decent people in the Patriotic Front would want to continue on this path. We don’t believe that all the members of the Patriotic Front are like Edgar and agree with all the rot going on in their party. There’s no political party of only bad people. There’s definitely some good people in the Patriotic Front. But where are they?

Supporting wrong decisions and practices is not patriotism or loyalty to one’s country or even political party. It is actually betrayal of one’s country or party.

As Mark Twain aptly put it, “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.” It is indeed supporting your leaders when they deserve it.

And George Washington urged, “Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.”

We all have a responsibility to ensure that whatever is done in our name is right. Whatever Edgar does in the name of the Patriotic Front is being done in the name of all the members of that party. And whatever Edgar does as President of the Republic of Zambia is being done in our name as citizens of this country. As such, we should not be silent when wrong things are done in our name because tomorrow we will be answerable for all the wrong things Edgar is doing in our name.

Barack Obama said, “We, the People, recognise that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what’s in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defence.”

We should individually and collectively refuse to resign ourselves to living in dishonour and ignominy.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton said, “The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.”

Edgar and his minions have done too much wrong to leave power. They live in perpetual fear.
Their thoughts are backed by so much insecurity, that sometimes create lies they believe.
The arrogance they exhibit is nothing but a camouflage of insecurity.

Seduced by the honey of power, for which they had not sacrificed at all, they are ready to commit any abuses to keep themselves in power. And this is not a difficult thing for them because insecurity reigns in the ugly heart of an empty brain.

Insecurity is an ugly thing, it makes you hate even people you don’t know.

We should never forget that the power of the people is much stronger than the people in power.
