STRIKERS Fashion Sakala, Patson Daka and midfielder Enock Mwepu were yesterday expected to join the Under-23 men’s national team that has set camp in Malawi ahead of today’s Egypt 2019 Olympic tournament first leg qualifier against the Junior Flames.
And the Football Association of Zambia has announced that all Week 9 league matches have been postponed to Wednesday March 27 due to the two national team engagements in the international matches over the weekend.
France-based Emmanuel Banda joined camp on Tuesday alongside Boston Muchindu who plies his trade in Portugal.
Team manager Hastings Ndovi told FAZfootball.com from Blantyre that three players joined camp on Monday.
“I have received Emmanuel Banda from France, Shemmy Mayembe (Zesco United) and Harrison Chisala (Nkana). We are only remaining with Fashion Sakala, Enock Mwepu and Patson Daka,” Ndovi said yesterday.
The team is lodged at Cross Roads Blantyre and will play Malawi today at the Kamuzu Banda Stadium before facing off in the return leg at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on March 24.
Winner over both legs will face either Burundi or Congo Brazzaville in the final qualifying round of the Africa Cup in November in Egypt.
The three top teams at the eight team tournament will qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Chambeshi has named the bulk of the 2017 Under-20 Africa Cup winning side in his set-up that has set its sights on Olympic qualification.
Prior to the seven-day international camp in South Africa, the team had been having weekly camps for six weeks as part of giving them the best possible preparations.
Meanwhile, FAZ league manager Katongo Kabungo announced that: “Due to the two national team engagements in the international matches both on Saturday and Sunday. All week 9 league games have been postponed to Wednesday Match 27.”
