LET us use the Roan Constituency by-election loss for introspection and not finger pointing and blame games, PF member Emmanuel Chilubanama has advised. The former State House permanent secretary, who is also vying for the Lusaka Province PF chairmanship, said he had personally found the loss in Roan Constituency “very painful.”
Chishimba Kambwili’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) handed the ruling party an embarrassing defeat as little-known Joseph Chishala beat Joel Chibuye of the PF who had been fancied to win it. The defeat has divided opinion in the PF who find it hard to stomach the loss. Tens of voice notes have made it out of PF WhatsApp groups in which supporters are agonising about the loss and expressing fear about what may befall the party in the 2021 general elections. Others have blamed the loss on secretary general Davis Mwila and Lusaka Province minister Bowman Lusambo.
But Chilubanama said much as the Roan loss was painful, finger pointing and blaming each other over the defeat would do little to help the ruling party.
“In my personal opinion, this is not the time for blaming each other. It’s a time to assess the loss and also carry out self-introspection beginning with myself as a member of the party and conducting a postmortem and audit to ascertain the reasons leading to our loss in the Roan Constituency,” he said.
Chilubanama congratulated Chishala for scooping the seat, which made him the NDC’s elected official and also hailed Charles Chalwe for winning the Bahati Constituency seat. The Roan Constituency seat fell vacant when Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Patrick Matibini declared it vacant after then member of parliament Kambwili was deemed to have crossed floor after declaring himself leader of the NDC. PF secretary general Davies Mwila had vowed to teach Kambwili a lesson in the resulting by-election by defeating him and proving the party’s popularity on the Copperbelt.
