Govt evacuates Wina to SA

VICE-PRESIDENT Inonge Wina has been evacuated to South Africa for medical attention following a heart problem, which she suffered on Friday night.

Minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya who announced to a media yesterday, Vice-President Wina had been first taken to University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in the night on Friday before she was evacuated to South Africa yesterday morning.

“I would like to inform the nation that we had a health encounter with Her Honour Mrs Inonge Mutukwa Wina, Vice-President of the Republic of Zambia and it is prudent that the nation is kept informed. Last night Her Honour the Vice-President was evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka where a multidisciplinary medical team competently treated her for a heart condition,” Dr Chilufya said.

“His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia, visited Mrs Wina at UTH last night. The President commended the multidisciplinary team at the University Teaching Hospital for the manner in which they competently attended to Mrs Wina.”

Dr Chilufya said President Lungu facilitated the evacuation of Vice-President Wina to consolidate her scheduled review and “the anticipated short recuperation period.”

He said Vice-President Wina would undergo a thorough medical checkup.

“Mrs Wina, who is stable and in high spirits, was seen off this morning at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by the Minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya, Minister in the Vice-President’s Office Ms Sylvia Chalikosa, Acting Secretary to the Cabinet Mr Patrick Kangwa and other senior government officials. The country shall be kept informed as need arises,” said Dr Chilufya.

In early February, information permanent secretary Chanda Kasolo said the Vice-President was in India where she underwent a “very small routine operation” and was out of hospital less than 48 hours.

He explained that contrary to malicious people peddling cheap lies that Vice-President Wina was evacuated for specialist treatment, the Vice-President had a little challenge with one of her limbs which she wanted looked at.

Kasolo said those who were peddling cheap lies should have verified with government.

“Madam Wina has always used a particular doctor and she always goes for her checkups to the same doctor in India. So what she has done is use the opportunity to go to India to do two things. One, she has a little challenge with one of her limbs which she wanted looked at. It’s a very small routine operation which she was in hospital from

operation to coming out less than 48 hours. She was discharged and she went to stay in a hotel close to the hospital. She could have come back

but her doctor of course considering that our Vice-President is not a young lady, she is 79, so the doctor insisted that she has a complete

course of physio in India and then she can come back,” explained Kasolo.
