PATRIOTS for Economic Progress says PF member Kelvin Bwalya Fube’s the decision of to contest the 2021 presidential elections on the ruling party ticket is bold and should be applauded. In a statement, PeP president Sean Tembo appealed to President Lungu to stop his “junior party officials” from issuing threatening statements against Fube’s decision.
“As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP), we have noted the decision of Mr Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF) to contest the 2021 presidential elections on the ruling PF ticket and we wish to applaud him for taking such a bold decision,” he said. “We strongly believe that KBF’s decision to challenge President Lungu for the PF presidential candidacy in 2021 will greatly add to the enhancement of democracy in Zambia.”
Tembo said unless President Lungu is unsure of the strength of his support in PF and is worried that Fube might win at the convention, he should allow those that wished to challenge him to do so without intimidation.
“To President Lungu, our appeal is that he must stop his junior party officials from issuing threatening statements against KBF for his decision to stand up, step forward and offer himself for the PF presidential candidacy in 2021,” he said.
Tembo said he believed that intraparty democracy must not just be preached by the ruling PF, but must also be practiced by allowing those that wish to aspire for party positions to do so.
“It must be noted that President Lungu does not have a birthright for him alone to be president of PF, hence the need to allow others to aspire for that position without intimidating them,” he said.
Tembo said the alliance would form government with a landslide victory in 2021.
“However, regardless of who the PF presidential candidate will be in 2021 whether Mr Kelvin Bwalya Fube or Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, we have no doubt that the Opposition Alliance will form government with a landslide victory because the Zambian people have come to the realisation that the PF was a wrong answer to their problems from the word go,” said Tembo.
On Tuesday, Fube advised President Lungu to allow others to lead the party and the country.
“To our President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, I have few words…please take heed and reflect on our history as a political party. Recently, you confessed that people in your team have been lying to you. I could not agree more,” said Fube.
“Let me be clear Mr President: You have done your best for our party and this country. You cannot do beyond your best. Kindly pass on the mantle of leadership to us…Let us fight for you. Remove yourself and your team from this unnecessary fight. Take the wind out of the sail of the opposition. We shall do the fighting for the Patriotic Front. Without you as a target, the opposition will be lost. Their fight is personal.”
He added that he puts the country before anything when it comes to patriotism.
