WE’LL win, declares Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following another coup attempt.
Yesterday morning, US-backed and self-proclaimed “interim president” of Venezuela Juan Guaido called on the military to overthrow the legitimate government of President Maduro.
Guaido urged Venezuelans to take to the streets as he announced that “the final phase of the operation to topple President Nicolas Maduro is underway.”
Speaking through a loudspeaker to his cheering supporters, Guaido said, “Operation Freedom has begun!”
“We’re going to stand here together asking and demanding the military to join,” added Guaido.
“For many years, we have talked to the armed forces, and today it’s clear to us that the armed forces are with the Venezuelan people, who are not with a dictator.”
But President Maduro via Twitter declared, “”Nerves of Steel! I have spoken with the commanders of all the country’s regions and zones of comprehensive military defence, who have expressed their total loyalty to the people, to the Constitution and to the homeland. I call for maximum popular mobilisation to ensure the victory of peace. We Will win!”
And the Socialist Party in Zambia (SP) has condemned the on-going coup attempt against the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela.
The SP observed that having failed over the years to kill the leadership and destroy the gains of the Bolivarian Revolution, the United States was now desperately turning to rogues in the army to do their dirty job.
“As it is to be expected, the greatest majority of the troops and all commanders are loyal to the people, the Constitution and their homeland. Commandante Nicolas Maduro is the undisputed constitutional President of Venezuela,” the SP politburo said.
“It is grotesque that in the 21st Century a country still aims at enslaving other nations in order to plunder their wealth. The immense oil resources of Venezuela belong to the masses in that country. The United States and European imperialist powers plus their representatives in Venezuela have plundered that country for centuries. The Bolivarian Revolution reversed that plunder and redistributed the wealth to its people. This is against the logic of capitalist plunder. This is the reason why today a coup is underway – to deny the Venezuelan masses their regained sovereignty and dignity. The coup must be condemned in the strongest sense. It is highly destructive; it promotes violence and undemocratic values.”
The SP said all of the current United States policies toward Venezuela, “including this attempted coup, are a direct and unceremonious interference in its internal affairs.”
“It is hard to imagine a more monstrous example of interference in the internal affairs of another country,” said the SP.
“But this not new. They did this against Hugo Chavez in 2002. They did to Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana, Patrice Lumumba in Congo, Salvador Allende in Chile and many others in Latin America and Africa. Our total support goes to the Bolivarian Revolution, the people of Venezuela and Comandante Nicolas Maduro. Viva the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela! Abash United States imperialism!”
Bolivian President Evo Morales and Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel issued statements rejecting the military coup attempt in Venezuela.
“We strongly condemn the attempted coup in #Venezuela, by the right wing that is submissive to foreign interests. Sure that the courageous Bolivarian Revolution at the head of the brother @NicolasMaduro, will prevail over this new attack of the empire,” twitted President Morales. ““It would set an ominous precedent to let coup plotters gain ground in the region. Dialogue and peace must prevail over the coup.”
President Diaz-Canel wrote, “We reject this coup movement that attempts to fill the country with violence. The traitors who have placed themselves at the forefront of this subversive movement have deployed troops and police with military weapons on one of the city’s public highways to create anguish and terror. #HandsOffVenezuela”
Venezuelan defence minister Vladimir Padrino declared that, “The FANB stands firm in defense of the National Constitution and its legitimate authorities. All the military units deployed in the eight Integral Defense Regions report normalcy in their barracks and military bases, under the command of their natural commanders.”
National Constituent Assembly of Venezuela president Diosdado Cabello denied the capture of the Carlota Air Base, after a small group of soldiers appeared to be supporting the Guaido coup.
“No military installation has been violated in the country, they are on the street in the Altamira Distributor and we are directing operations from the Carlota Air Base,” said Cabello. “Likewise, the national government has called on the Venezuelan people to move to Miraflores to reject the coup attempt.”
But in Washington, hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton welcomed Guaido’s move stating that, “Venezuelans have made clear that the current path toward democracy is irreversible. Venezuela’s military has a choice: embrace democracy, protect civilians and members of the democratically-elected National Assembly, or face more man-made suffering and isolation.”
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said, “Today interim President Juan Guaido announced start of Operación Libertad. The U.S. Government fully supports the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy. Democracy cannot be defeated.”
Venezuelan foreign minister Jorge Arreaza denounced the support of the Colombian and US governments of the latest coup attempt.
“Washington and Bogota have planned all the unsuccessful unconstitutional actions of recent months in Venezuelan territory,” Arreaza tweeted denouncing a statement by Colombian President Iván Duque calling on the Venezuelan people to reject the “dictatorship and usurpation of Maduro.”
