THE Chipolopolo boys yesterday concluded their three-day weekly training camp with a 9-0 thumping of Division Two outfit Young Zanaco in a practice match at Woodlands Stadium. Stand-in coach Aggrey Chiyangi has been drilling the local lads ahead of the 2019 COSAFA Cup. According to FAZ, in the first practice match, Zambia overcame Young Zanaco 2-0 with goals from Austin Muwowo while the other was an own goal by James Mwila. Chiyangi had lined up a two-fronted strike force that had Lazarous Kambole and Tapson Kaseba while Ernest Mbewe and Austin Muwowo were deployed on the wings. Power Dynamos’ Benson Sakala and Forest Rangers’ Webster Muzaza were in the middle of the pack with Adrian Chama and Thandi Mwape taking up the central defence partnership.
Sebastian Mwange was between the sticks with Lawrence Chungu and Clement Mwape completing the set up. In the second stream, Zanaco’s Chitiya Mususu banged in a hat-trick with the other goals coming from Stanley Nshimbi, Emmanuel Chabula, Bruce Musakanya and Marvin Jere to post an emphatic 7-0 result. Mususu was paired with Chabula while Musakanya and Nshimbi were on the flanks. Lawrence Mulenga took the shot stopper role but had little to keep away from the opposition. The technical bench is zeroing in on the team that will represent the country at the COSAFA championship that kicks-off on May 25 in Durban, South Africa.
Chiyangi’s charges will join the party at the quarterfinal stage where they take on the winners of Group B which comprises Namibia, Mozambique, Seychelles and Malawi. Zambia are four-time winners of the COSAFA Cup but have been to 10 finals in all. Their previous title was in 2013 on home soil. The Chipolopolo won both of the first two editions of the COSAFA Cup in 1997 and 1998, but it took until 2006 for them to claim their third regional title.
