MPULUNGU ward 23 councillor Christopher Shakafuswa was yesterday detained by the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault.
Shakafuswa is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 248 of the Penal Code chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Appearing before Lusaka magistrate Nthandose Chabala, Shakafuswa denied assaulting Mazili Namwiinga.
He allegedly assaulted Namwiinga on April 20, 2019 when she went to demand money owed to her.
After the accused took plea, state prosecutor Muleya Simusa asked the court to vary the councillor’s bond conditions as he did not present any sureties when he was released on police bond.
But Shakafuswa argued that he is not a flight risk and promised to avail himself before court whenever the matter comes up.
“I cannot run. I will continue to avail myself before this court,” said Shakafuswa.
Magistrate Chabala remanded him in custody until he produces sureties to pay a sum of K3,000 in their own recognizance.
“You will be remanded in custody until you meet the conditions,” she ordered
According to social media claims, Namwiinga was allegedly assaulted by Shakafuswa by unknown cadres at Shaka’s Kraal.
The incident happened when Namwiinga went to claim payment of money for two security lights that she supplied to Shaka’s Kraal.
