VERY soon the PF will start asking that we get police permits to go hospital if one falls ill, says NDC vice-president Josephs Akafumba.
Commenting on police attempts on Sunday to stop UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema from attending mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Church on grounds that he did not have a police permit, Akafumba challenged President Edgar Lungu to condemn the action if he was a true democrat.
“[President Lungu] parades himself as a humble man, a democrat and a believer in human rights but sends instructions to the police to stop HH from praying to God? How do you send policemen, armed policemen, into a house of God? We know that such an operation requires police in plain clothes to carry pistols,” he said.
“I am not surprised because Mr Lungu is afraid of his own shadow. It has been seen through his actions against the opposition, [Harry] Kalaba of the Democratic Party has not been spared, HH will continuously be hounded by the police and State agents on instructions from him. Very soon, I can assure you that he will instruct the police to arrest anyone to be stopped from seeking medical attention if he or she has no police permit. President Lungu will seek to arrest anyone for going to the toilet without a police permit, most especially HH, CK (Chishimba Kambwili) and Kalaba.”
Akafumba, a prominent lawyer, noted that the civil society had not been spared from harassment by President Lungu and could not exercise their constitutional rights to demonstrate.
“The civil society cannot exercise their rights to speak for the voiceless communities without being arrested, we are literally in a police state being run by a dictator,” said Akafumba.
