THE Zambia Airport Cooperation Limited says the suspension of its staff in Ndola is as a result of a breach of aviation security regulations at the airport. ZACL communications and brand manager Mweembe Sikaulu said in an interview yesterday that the suspension was in accordance with the national security programme.
“The suspension is as a result of a breach of aviation security regulations at the airport. The suspension is in accordance with the national security programme,” Sikaulu said.
On Tuesday, ZACL suspended its chief security officer Fridah Mupasha Mweetwa for “failure to perform duties”.
Also suspended is airport manager Joseph Mumbi.
Mweetwa confirmed her suspension in an interview Tuesday afternoon.
“Yes, I have been suspended from work. The reason on my suspension letter is alleged failure the way we handled a named opposition leader on May 11, 2019. That is all I can say for now. We will wait for the due process. That is all I can say. Thank you for your concern,” Mweetwa said.
But according to sources at the airport, the duo failed to perform its duties by giving UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema “special” VIP treatment.
This was on Saturday when the opposition leader arrived at the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola for his tour of the Copperbelt.
Hichilema arrived at the airport to a thunderous welcome from UPND supporters.
